Reforming global food system: agenda for global health, climate resilience, sustainable economies

Date & Time: 10:00-12:00 JST/ 1:00-3:00 GMT Friday 14 April

Context:
Since 2022 the dominant narrative regarding the increased food insecurity, hunger and famine has been centering around the war in Ukraine as the key cause. However, this has been distracting attention away from the more systemic issue: it is our current capitalist economic system and our broken global food system, where food has become a lucrative commodity which allows oligopolized businesses to increase prices on essential goods without any limits – and do commodities trading in complete isolation from the overall impact on human rights.

Session Objectives:

  • to discuss the urgency of reforming the global food system if we want to truly limit humanitarian emergencies, protect the universal right to food for all, build climate resilience and more sustainable economies operating within planetary boundaries;
  • to make a case for the reform of the global food system where G7 countries should play a significant role.

Speakers:

  • Speaker: Masaki Inaba, a representative of the C7 Global Health WG

  • Speaker: Jeremy Wellard, Humanitarian WG

  • Speaker: Risa Endo, Environmental WG

  • Speaker: Susi Snyder, Nuclear Disarmament WG

  • Moderator: Ms. Sandra Martinsone, Bond UK
