Balancing Urgent Climate Action and Environmental Considerations

Date & Time: Friday, April 14 10:00-12:00 (JST)

Overview:
According to the latest IPCC report, in order to keep the global temperature rise to 1,5 degrees compared to preindustrial levels, the whole world must transition to zero-carbon solutions by 2040. However, G7 countries continue to operate and finance fossil fuel power not only in their own countries but also in developing countries.

On the other hand, while civil society welcomes the G7s leadership in transitioning to renewable energy, serious considerations are raised concerning the rushed transition to renewables en masse. Already, environmental impacts are seen in the mineral acquisition process for transition minerals, and there is a growing concern that a global competition for such critical minerals for the energy transition will exacerbate the destruction of habitats and loss of biodiversity.

In this break out session, we will hear voices from the Global South who will be most affected by an increased demand in critical minerals needed for the energy transition away from fossil fuels. We will aim to highlight environmental degradation in key nickel deposits in Asia which are already taking place, and also will examine potential risks for prospective deposits of nickel, manganese and cobalt from deep sea mining in the Pacific. Civil society groups urge the G7 to pursue decarbonizing policies, but also demand that the transition be completed in a just manner that includes consideration to balance decarbonization and sound environmental protection in the acquisition of critical transition minerals. Financing of projects should also be made to align with these policies.

Shigeru Tanaka (Fair Finance Guide Japan/PARC)
